I know that I'm probably in the minority, but I did not really care for "Free Fallin'". My main gripe with the episode had to do with the fact that it focused way too much on Jules and Travis, which sucked the life of the other two stories.
I've never hid my disdain for Jules, which mostly stems from the fact that she's way too needy when it comes to everyone, but Travis especially. I've never found their relationship anything but dysfunctional and inappropriate, but "Free Fallin'" pushed it to outright creepy and disturbing. Jules making out with Grayson while he was imitating Travis, and the whole one-night stand joke was icky and not even funny to begin with. Also, her tough love approach to his dropping out of college wasn't convincing since she's never once proven that she can be that kind of parent. I got that was the point of it all, but she's not forceful with anyone, so why should we take her seriously now?
On paper, I should have loved the Bobby/Laurie/Andy Penny Can subplot, but it quickly ran out of steam. Again, something about the entire thing just felt off because it was hard to swallow that any business would take Penny Can seriously, and having the Crew ultimately sell out also felt somewhat false. The writers tried to rationalize the move, but again it all felt out of character, especially in Bobby's case. I did enjoy seeing Lou Diamond Phillips' return though.
Even the Grayon/Ellie/Tom vs. The Children of the Chalk should have gone over better than it did since I think the duo of Grayson and Ellie are a force to be reckoned with. Instead, their antics were only worth a few laughs here and there, and the whole home schooled kids gag wore thin fast. I did like how they finally started to accept Tom though; that was a nice moment.
I can see why some die-hard CT fans would love this episode, and since I consider myself a casual fan, I guess it just wasn't in my wheelhouse. Too much reliance on creepiness, absurdities, and some character moments that didn't quite make sense to me made for a letdown on an episode.
