For me, one of the surprise shows from last season was Spartacus: Blood and Sand. It had a rough start, but it quickly became my guilty pleasure show, and I was excited when it was picked up for a second season. Unfortunately, star Andy Whitfield was diagnosed with cancer and production was put into jeopardy. The idea of a prequel series started floating around in order to keep people employed and to give fans a hold over while Whitfield recovered, and Spartacus: Gods of the Arena was born...
It looks like S:GotA has all of the elements that made the parent series so memorable (sex, violence, John Hannah & Lucy Lawless), so I'm hoping it can do the franchise justice. What's more important is if the show creators can find a suitable replacement for Whitfield (who will always be Spartacus).
